The exhibition "Encounters on the Page: Interlinear Translations from Indonesia," opened on October 29th in Jerusalem. Organized by the ERC-funded research group Textual Microcosms, it showcases the phenomenon of interlinear translation as it took shape in various languages and cultures of the Indonesian archipelago. Interlinear translations are texts written in one language and containing an often word-for-word translation into another language in between the lines. Thus, among others, the exhibition features images and analyses of a Quran from Java (Arabic to Javanese translation), a Batak church hymn (Batak to Indonesian), and an Old Javanese Bharatyuddha translated into Balinese on a lontar. The exhibition brings to light the many encounters reflected in such translations: between languages, scripts, sounds, historical periods, teacher and disciple, past and present.
